API Design That Survives Three Years of Change

Versioning, pagination, and error shape are the three decisions you will live with longest.

Version from the first release

Adding versioning after external consumers exist is a migration project. Adding it on day one costs a path segment.

Prefer additive change over new versions, but have the mechanism ready.

Paginate everything that can grow

Any collection endpoint without pagination is an outage waiting for a customer with more data than you tested with.

Cursor pagination handles insertion during traversal better than offset pagination.

One error shape, everywhere

A consistent error body with a machine-readable code, a human message, and a request identifier makes integration and support dramatically cheaper.

Include the request identifier in logs so a customer report maps to a trace in seconds.

Where to go from here

If you are weighing API design for an upcoming project, the useful next step is usually a short scoping conversation rather than a longer article. Bring your constraints — budget, timeline, existing systems, and the team you already have — and the decision usually resolves itself in an hour.

We run these as a fixed-scope discovery session with a written recommendation at the end, including the cases where our advice is that you do not need us.
