Checkout Changes That Actually Move Conversion

Most checkout advice is folklore. These are the changes that survive an honest test.

Reduce fields before redesigning

Every optional field costs completions. Address autocomplete, saved cards, and removing the account-creation requirement consistently outperform visual redesigns.

Guest checkout with an optional post-purchase account creation captures both.

Show the total cost early

Shipping and tax revealed at the last step is the most common abandonment trigger. Show the full cost as soon as the address is known, or earlier.

Unexpected charges damage trust beyond the single session.

Handle failure well

Payment failures happen. A clear message, a retained cart, and an alternative method offered immediately recovers a meaningful share of them.

Log failure reasons by gateway. One provider is often responsible for a disproportionate share.

Where to go from here

If you are weighing checkout optimisation for an upcoming project, the useful next step is usually a short scoping conversation rather than a longer article. Bring your constraints — budget, timeline, existing systems, and the team you already have — and the decision usually resolves itself in an hour.

We run these as a fixed-scope discovery session with a written recommendation at the end, including the cases where our advice is that you do not need us.
