Define first value precisely
Name the specific moment a new user first gets something useful. Every onboarding decision is then measured against time-to-that-moment.
If the team cannot agree on what that moment is, that is the first problem to fix.
Defer everything not required
Profile completion, team invitations, and settings can wait. Each field before first value costs completions.
Ask for information at the moment it becomes necessary, with the reason visible.
Instrument every step
Funnel analytics per onboarding step shows exactly where users leave. The biggest drop is almost always fixable and almost always surprising.
Re-measure after each change; onboarding fixes often move the drop rather than removing it.
Where to go from here
If you are weighing onboarding design for an upcoming project, the useful next step is usually a short scoping conversation rather than a longer article. Bring your constraints — budget, timeline, existing systems, and the team you already have — and the decision usually resolves itself in an hour.
We run these as a fixed-scope discovery session with a written recommendation at the end, including the cases where our advice is that you do not need us.
