Feature Flags Without the Cleanup Debt

Flags decouple deploy from release. They also accumulate into untestable branching if nobody removes them.

Separate flag types

Release flags are temporary and must be removed. Operational kill switches and permanent entitlement checks are different things with different lifecycles.

Mixing them is why flag systems become unmanageable.

Give every release flag an expiry

Set a removal date at creation and enforce it. A flag older than a quarter is technical debt with a config UI.

Alert on stale flags so removal is a routine task, not a cleanup project.

Test both paths

Every flag doubles the state space. Test the on and off paths for anything on a critical journey.

Untested combinations are where flag-related incidents come from.

Where to go from here

If you are weighing feature flag hygiene for an upcoming project, the useful next step is usually a short scoping conversation rather than a longer article. Bring your constraints — budget, timeline, existing systems, and the team you already have — and the decision usually resolves itself in an hour.

We run these as a fixed-scope discovery session with a written recommendation at the end, including the cases where our advice is that you do not need us.
